iceflower arctic art project

Greenland, 2000

100 colourful art-flowers, each about 230 cm high, were put together, forming one giant “Iceflower”, up on the Mittivakkat glacier in the Ammassaliq district of East-Greenland. Together with two helpers, the photographers Eugen Gebhardt and Stefan Huber I raised up this strange installation during the summer of 2000. How strong will these strange objects affect this arctic wilderness?

With our rope as tape measure the little sketch of the big flower was transferred into reality, covering a total area of about 170/100 meters.

A non-realistic atmosphere opened up, the dazzling colors of the flowers as a contrast to the splendid white surface of glacier. A temporary combination of contrary worlds had changed the atmosphere of the surrounding field intensively.
